The 2024 Global Travel Trends Report by American Express Travel offers a compelling glimpse into the evolving motivations and preferences of travelers this year. Whether it’s attending major sporting events, embarking on solo adventures, or leaving room for spontaneous exploration, travelers in 2024 are focused on creating meaningful, transformative experiences.

Sports and Travel: A Powerful Combination

One of the standout trends in 2024 is the growing intersection of sports and travel. According to the report, 75% of travelers attending sporting events this year are willing to spend at least three hours on the road to reach their destination. Millennials and Gen-Z travelers, in particular, are eager to combine their love for sports with travel, with 67% planning to attend sporting events like soccer, basketball, and Formula 1 races.

Sports tourism is also reshaping the appeal of major cities. Destinations like New York, Miami, London, and Las Vegas are increasingly becoming hubs for sports enthusiasts, with Las Vegas capitalizing on its growing reputation as a sports city. As Steve Weitman, President of Wynn and Encore Las Vegas, notes, the city is now offering luxury travel experiences around these events, attracting visitors who want both high-end accommodations and unique sports moments.

The Rise of Major Trips

The appetite for “major” trips—those long-anticipated, dream vacations—is on the rise, with 65% of respondents more interested in taking significant journeys in 2024. These trips often involve immersive, once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as visiting remote destinations like the Galapagos Islands or going on an African safari.

Seabourn Cruise Line’s Steve Smotrys points out that travelers are hungry for adventure and cultural immersion. Major trips are viewed as transformative, offering opportunities to explore distant, hard-to-reach places and create lasting memories. Interestingly, 66% of respondents are saving up specifically for these trips, with many planning their itineraries 3-6 months in advance.

The allure of major trips highlights a shift in travel priorities. For many, it’s no longer about the cost—it’s about the experience and the stories that come with it.

Solo Travel: Self-Care on the Road

Solo travel is booming in 2024, particularly among Millennials and Gen-Z, with 76% planning to travel alone this year. The freedom to craft a personalized itinerary and the opportunity for self-discovery are among the key drivers of this trend. Whether it’s a beach retreat or a weekend getaway to a new city, solo travel allows individuals to recharge, reset, and focus on self-care.

The report reveals that 66% of solo travelers are centering their trips around self-love and personal indulgence. This trend isn’t limited to younger generations—Baby Boomers and Gen-X travelers are also embracing the flexibility and independence that come with solo journeys.

Spontaneous Travel: The Thrill of the Unexpected

While many travelers are carefully planning their major trips, spontaneity is also on the rise. The report shows that 78% of respondents are drawn to the idea of last-minute trips, with Millennials and Gen-Z leading the trend. Spontaneous travel offers flexibility, allowing travelers to leave room in their schedules for unexpected discoveries and local tips.

This shift reflects a desire for freedom from the structured and scheduled nature of daily life. Travelers are increasingly booking one-way tickets, making last-minute plans, and embracing the thrill of the unknown. Dining, shopping, and cultural immersion are the most popular spontaneous activities, with many travelers opting for flexibility in how they experience their destinations.

Travel Reimagined

The 2024 Global Travel Trends Report reveals a new era in travel, where experiences trump possessions, and flexibility is key. Whether it’s following a favorite sports team, embarking on a major expedition, or taking a solo journey to unwind, travellers are prioritizing meaningful, immersive experiences. This year, travel is about more than just reaching a destination—it’s about creating memories that will last a lifetime.
